Mrs. F. J. Stetson:
Somerville, MassachusettsAs Written:Mass.
Dear Sister:

Your letterEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. arrived on Tuesday 2nd InstantAs Written:Inst., and the "Carrol County Pioneer"Editorial Note: The Carrol County Pioneer was a New Hampshire newspaper that was printed weekly from 1881-1924. todayAs Written:to-day.

The latter I enjoyed, as I read every favorable notice of Christian ScienceAs Written:C– S– with much satisfaction and ignorant criticisms only serve to strengthen my faith. About six weeks ago there appeared in the "Sunday School Times"Editorial Note: The Sunday-school times was a Pennsylvania newspaper that was printed weekly from 1859-1966. of PhiladelphiaEditorial Note: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from the pen of H. C. Trumbull, its editor, a long article on "Presumption not Faith," in which by force of ridicule and old worn out sophisms he attacked the whole system of healing otherwise than by applied materia medicaAs Written:materia-medica, showing As Written: shewing an ignorance of Metaphysical Healing altogether unpardonable an editor of his rank and unjustly classing all sorts of mountebank's mesmerists, electromagneticAs Written:electro-magnetic - and animal magneticAs Written:animal-magnetic" et ceteraAs Written:&c imposters, with the demonstrators of the highest truth pertaining to disease.

When I read this my indignation was roused, but when in the same paperEditorial Note: The Sunday-school times of last week I read among "Open letters" an answer from a Minnesota subscriber who is evidently a scientistEditorial Note: Christian Scientist I read it with hungry eyes and laughed in triumph at the masterly treatment of the subject from which the editor tries As Written: tryes to rally like a wounded snake but blow after blow has struck the effort itself until I pity him and it. "Truth is the Conqueror" How I long when I see these misrepresentations to rush openheartedAs Written:open hearted into the conflict; but the voice comes again saying, Be patient! Wait! Then I am especially As Written: specially interested in your work. I read the editorial notes to my wife and she too seemed to enjoy although she is in darkness I asked her this morning if she would not like to be able like you to go about and heal the sick and she said Yes! I look forward with trembling & hope to the time when she will have been prepared for this glorious work and when she has seen the light and the Truth has made her free I know she will be untiring in her labors for suffering mortals. How grand for a woman to be a daughter of Liberty breaking the chains of slaves.

I read, or rather devoured your letterEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. and then studied it. It was just what I needed and oh how much I did appreciate it, I was immediately stronger. I read it to my wife and she seemed to enjoy it, but as much as I talk about ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science and try to enlist her she knows not the first principle of the healing method. Having believed in a personal God, and theological dogma, my first questionings nearly shook the whole fabric of her belief. called faith. She is now nearly right on Inspiration, Atonement, et ceteraAs Written:&c and while she makes no effort to reach out after the new thought the old notions are departing. I would give a fortune if I had it to see her in even the dawning light in which I stand. and I think when I am cured she will be convinced. She will go with me. One day I said to her that when we were able to go to BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts that. I must go and that if she could not see then as I do, she could attend the "Christian Church in Boston. She answered that she would go with me, that she couldn't have me believing one thing and she believing another. She does not think much now, and never will I am afraid until she understands Christian ScienceAs Written:C– S– and then I believe she will be as faithful to the CauseEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. as needle to the pole. With even the poor shadow of Christianity she never complains in making any reasonable sacrifice for others. She needs a leader and when she sees the cause is right she will follow to the end and sometimes forgetting self she will even lead, You say in your letterEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. that we must both drink of that living water, May it be so! My soul thirsteth for it.– It is continually before my thoughts, but it grows darker in prospect, I came to this place at a great financial sacrifice. Last year in Nicholasville KentuckyAs Written:Ky I received $800Editorial Note: $800.00 in 1886 is the equivalent of $22,026.52 in 2020. and if I had stayed would have been paid $1000Editorial Note: $1000.00 in 1886 is the equivalent of $27,533.16 in 2020.. My church there in the BluegrassAs Written:Blue Grass Region of Kentucky was wealthy, but as a whole the members were antiprogressive and worldly. There was no congeniality in thought

Many of them were sectarian in views although a nonsectarian church with an open bible, and I resigned. They published resolutions recommending me in very high terms and I could have readily made an engagement with many sister churches in that section at even a better salary; but they were all of the same character and required a minister to overlook the grossness of their formality or be unpopular. Already prepared for it, when ChristianAs Written:Chr Science fell into my thoughts through "Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy I grew away still further from such religionists and I could not bear it.

Corresponding with a number of churches from Ohio to Colorado, I came to this placeEditorial Note: Leipsic, Ohio on a visit by invitation. I was struggling within and if I had been able would have gone to Boston before settling anywhere, but my wife's opposition to going to Boston on what she considered an uncertainty and, my lack of means at the time to make a visit for the purpose of Satisfying her made us determine on coming here, or rather caused us to accept a call. I had several two in Kentucky, one in Colorado and if I had signified my willingness to accept could have gotten some of the best fields open to young men among us, that is for the church distinction, I had grown sick of all that, I found here a people poor, largely uneducated, but progressive in spirit. They were liberal. Women had an equality with men, and that I had contended for but was always opposed. My last churchEditorial Note: Possibly The Church of Christ in Cadiz, Kentucky. would not allow a woman any voice in public meetings and while I struggled the whole year to educate them on this it was of no avail. Then here too I saw that while waiting until the way was opened to Christian ScienceAs Written:C.– S– at which time my wife had promised to go with me, I could spend much time studying, as much less demand would be made on my time, whereas There, I had a large Congregation and was required to do a great deal of visiting. It seemed all things combined to cause us to come here and while Mrs W— had said that she would not favor my going anywhere for less than $1000Editorial Note: $1000.00 in 1886 is the equivalent of $27,533.16 in 2020., which was reasonable as I had been offered that when I laid this case before her hoping somewhat she would reject she said we could live on $600Editorial Note: $600.00 in 1886 is the equivalent of $16,519.89 in 2020.. and if these people were struggling we ought to help them. You see then on this salary I have little hope of saving anything to take me through ClassEditorial Note: Waddell would eventually take Mary Baker Eddy’s Primary class in August 1886., so I shall just wait. Our living is very cheap however, much more so than last year and while we are learning good lessons in domestic economy we live just as comfortably as we could desire and have a little to give where it is most needed. As to paying you I am willing to make any sacrifice to do that. I cannot expect you to work for nothing. Your terms are reasonable, I care nothing for money only for useful purposes I have loaned $25.00Editorial Note: $25.00 in 1886 is the equivalent of $688.33 in 2020. to a friend which I cannot get for a week or ten days, but as soon as I collect that or I am paid on my salary I shall send you some more. I thought to have collected the loan last Monday but was disappointed. I do not complain at my poverty nor am I ashamed of it. I know I have brought it on myself by desiring to give to others and I have always had enough to supply needs, and will still have. So as soon as I can I shall make another payment, I am better, I am growing in grace and the knowledge or understanding of TruthII Pet 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. , and praise God that the dream of matter is being forgotten, Oh how I long, to be with those in work who I now recognize in Christ as truly akin. God grant it. I am improving my time. Each day I spend some time reading Science & Health"Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy This is the fifth time I am going over the booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and they are still fresh. Hoping to receive the new book soon, and to hear from you I am very gratefully
