Editorial Title: John M. C. Murphy to Mary Baker Eddy, October 17, 1883
Author: John M. C. Murphy
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: October 17, 1883
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by John M. C. Murphy on lined printed stationery of J. M. C. Murphy, Hatter and Gents' Furnisher, from East Boston, Massachusetts.
Editorial Note: Murphy is replying to a letter (not extant) written by Mary Baker Eddy on October 12, 1883. He tells her he has been so busy in his store that he has not had time to attend meetings of the Christian Scientist Association. He tells of giving Christian Science treatment through prayer to a woman who has had enlarged glands in her neck for over 25 years. Through Murphy's prayers the glands have been reduced in size and the woman is breathing more freely, but she has not yet been completely healed. He asks for help from Eddy, or from members of the Christian Scientist Association, in removing from his own mind the error that is keeping him from witnessing a complete healing. He is going to send Clara E. Choate a check for $5.00 ($130.59 in 2016) as payment for a subscription to The Christian Science Journal, in case Choate needs it before she sees him in person. Murphy asks when the Sunday services begin, and he concludes his letter by saying that his wife is unable to study Christian Science with Eddy at present due to family cares.
