Editorial Title: Samuel G. Todd to Mary Baker Eddy, October 15, 1882
Author: Samuel G. Todd
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: October 15, 1882
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Samuel G. Todd on lined paper from Newburyport, Massachusetts.
Editorial Note: Todd tells Mary Baker Eddy that he used to have her on a pedestal, but he now realizes that she is fallible and has made mistakes. Regarding controversies between Eddy and some of her students, Todd has listened to both sides and has concluded that the wrong was not entirely on the students' side. Todd and Eddy have never had any trouble with each other, but he believes that would not necessarily be the case if he was around her much. He warns against treating George W. Chase unfairly and asks that she give him an honorable discharge from the Church of Christ (Scientist) and the Christian Scientist Association. Todd's own reasons for wanting to withdraw from the Church and Association are valid, namely, that he would have to travel forty miles to attend meetings. He would like to see Eddy again and listen to her explanations of truth, but he is thinking of moving away and may not see her for some time. Todd knows that Eddy has had a hard time and many enemies to contend with. Confused and influenced by them, he thinks Eddy may have said and done things she would not have in calmer moments.
