My dear Madam.

Will you kindly inform me whether one A. J. Swarts, professing to be a Metaphysician, practicing Christian Science according to your teaching: is a graduate of the Mass Metaphysical College? Is he authorized in any way to teach or heal according to Christian Science?

Perhaps I ought to explain that through me some friends of mine who have a daughter who has been a cripple for twenty years, were induced to investigate the ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science as taught by you and they procured a copy of Science & HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Dr Swarts happened to go to the city where they live – Topeka KansasAs Written:Kan – and claiming to be one of your students, and, I think, a graduate of your college, organized a class, which Miss Devendorf – the young lady referred to - was induced to join. As I was in Topeka at the time I was largely instrumental in inducing her family to consent to the arrangement. I have never been quite satisfied that Dr Swarts taught Christian Science, and have not been able to escape from the suspicion that the Science taught by him and his wife, is tainted by Modern Spiritualism, Mesmerism, and other isms foreign to and in conflict with the system taught by youEditorial Note: Christian Science.

Lately the conviction has impressed me so strongly that I resolved to investigate with a view to correcting the error, if any exist, to which I was a party.

The young lady has derived great happiness from what she has learned, and yet she has made no progress towards the desired result - to be able to walk - though it is about two months since she first placed herself under the care of Dr Swarts. He is using her case to advance his cause, and has published a statement from her in the interest of Mental Science, which I am afraid is only another name for Swarts

If I am mistaken regarding the purity of the teachings of Dr Swarts, then no harm can come to him or my friends from the writing this letter to you, but if my suspicions are well founded, there remains for me but one duty: to cause the Truth to be proclaimed. I am a seeker after knowledge, and already I can say that the Truth of Christian Science is entirely clear to me and in time I hope to know why. In the meantime I feel that my friends ought to be saved from a perpetuation of the Error that has made one of God's As Written: Gods creatures a sufferer for 20 years. May I ask you to point me the way?

Sincerely Yours
