Dear Mrs. Eddy,

Please allow me to introduce myselfAs Written:myselfe. Mina Andrews, the only child of a lady who was cured by following the instruction in your work on Science And HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

If it will not weary you I would like to tell you something of what you have done for my mother, and of the gratitude we feel toward you.

Mother was sick seven years and during the last few months of that time was so paralyzed that, as she expresses it, she was lost to herself As Written: herselfe except through the sense of sight, but her mental faculties were not affected. The physicians said that such a case having reached that stage was hopeless, and mother must do quickly what remained to be done. SometimeAs Written:Some time previous to this a caller had told mother of several incidents similar in substance to this which was one of them. "A metaphysician while taking a walk was impelled As Written: impeled to enter a certain house, though not knowing for what purpose." "She found a little child sick there, and taking it in her arms, kissed it, when she laid it down again it was restored to health."

Before leaving the caller gave mother a pamphlet directing her where to send for the book Science And HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

[*]Archival Note: The following paragraph has been marked, probably by Mary Baker Eddy.At the time the doctor told mother she must die, mother studied your book quite a while, and it was then, when every other help had failed that she turned to metaphysics, and through following your teaching, perseveringly and regardless of discouragements she soon began to improve, and since then – about eight years, she has enjoyed perfect health. You can imagine our gratitude better than we can express it.

I am nineteen years old now, and mother earnestly wishes me to study the Christian scienceEditorial Note: Christian Science, take the course and then commence practicingAs Written:practiceing. She needs to use little persuasion for I am as interested in it as she is anxious to have me be. I think it is a pure, noble work.

My home is in a small village surrounded by still smaller ones, and as is common in such places, the people have perfect confidence in the family physician who calls all who step aside from their mode of practice, quacks or cranks. therefore I imagine as it was with Christ when he could do no mighty works in his own country because of their unbeliefMatt 13:53 ¶And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence. Matt 13:54 And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Matt 13:55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? Matt 13:56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? Matt 13:57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. Matt 13:58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. , so it would be with me if I began my practice here. Please tell me, do you think there is any prospect of my having patients enough in the city to cover the expense of my board et ceteraAs Written:& c. until As Written: untill I might gain the confidence of the people here? I am very sure I will be allowed to board at the New England Conservatory of Music while I am pursuing As Written: persueing the metaphysical course, for I have been a student there, and Mrs. Tourjee was an intimate friend.

I have omitted As Written: omited the reason why I shall need patients enough to cover the expense of my board, it is because my mother and I are living in moderate circumstances and we cannot afford to advance more than As Written: tham my course tuition and board while I am pursuing As Written: persueing the course. Will you please tell me what you charge for instruction, and whether I may begin about the last of April?

With gratitude and respect,
Mina Andrews.
