For some little time past my attention has been given to investigating the claims of “Christian Science”. Unable to understand it from the simple reading of your bookEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy & paper. I have sought by personal interviews with one and another of your pupils to ascertain whether the So called Christian Science as taught by you is of God and the demonstration of His power and good will to man or whether it is a counterfeit of Truth. I have just now come from a long talk with Mr. H. P. Bailey of 50 Magnolia St. Dorchester. And by him recommended to yourself.

When I tell you that for several years I have been vainly reaching out and striving for a Higher Christian Life and experience earnestly desiring the fulfillment of Paul’s prayer in the 3d chapter of Ephesians 16th to 20th versesEph 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; Eph 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, Eph 3:18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; Eph 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Eph 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, in my own experience, you will. I think, understand my motive in seeking to know more about Christian Science. If this is the will of God for me I wish to throw myself unreservedly into it as a life work. And to experience the demonstration of it in my own body – If otherwise, I would much rather abide as I am with the Divine Blessing than to be healed without it.

Granted that the “ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science is of God. how am I to know, if after taking a course of lessons from you Whether I am one whom God is pleased to use as an instrument of healing to others? We read “to one is given the word of Wisdom to another faith: to another the gifts of healing” &c &cI Cor 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. I Cor 12:5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. I Cor 12:6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. I Cor 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. I Cor 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; I Cor 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; I Cor 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: I Cor 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. Those who have abundance of time and money can well afford to risk both on an experiment; but to others, who like myself, have long been dependent upon daily labor for daily bread, it is a matter of far more serious consequence if the venture is a failure.

I have written this much by way of introduction not wishing to add one to the large numbers who I am told Seek your presence with wrong motives. If I mistake may God hedge up the wayHos 2:6 ¶Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and make a wall, that she shall not find her paths. and turn my attention another way that shall be His way for me – but if Christian Science and the Metaphysical College is for me.. I trust there may be some convenient time for an interview by your appointment.

If you would know more of me - I can refer you to Mr Geo. E. Ricker, assistant pastor of the Warren Ave Church – of which I am a member. also to Miss C. V. Drinkwater Supt’ B Y. W. C. A. 68 Warrenton St. – which is also my address and Home.

Hoping for a line from you I am Very Respectfully
Miss E. S. Benton.
