Dear Sister

I have been entirely cured during the last few months (by one who studied with you) of ailments of more than ten years' As Written: years standing. All this being done by the Lord Jesus through Christian Science, I have naturally come to think very gravely and deeply upon the subject.

Unfortunately or otherwise there are two different schools in our city teaching Christian Science Both claim to be right. For my own part I am satisfied that Miss Brown's teaching is in harmony with yours and therefore must be correct– of the other ("The Emma Hopkins School") I know but little– but the following statement was made to my mother a few days ago by one the "Emma Hopkins" students, and I write to inquire of you, as the "Great FountainheadAs Written:Fountain Head" of this work here on earth if there is any truth in it; he said: "Mrs. Eddy teaches (but we do not) that there is such a thing as mesmerism in Christian Science and that Christian Science teaches it, but she warns her students continually against using it (Christian Science or the mesmerism of Christian Science) as a means for the accomplishment of anythingAs Written:any thing but healing- She says there are cases where Christian Science (or the mesmerism taught by it,) has been used for base and malicious purposes– to influence one,– contrary to one's As Written: ones own will and against one's As Written: ones own desires,– to do things they would not think of doing if not under some spell or mesmeric power".

—Now Mrs. Eddy I implore you in God's name to tell me if the above is truth. Tell me I pray you– is Christian Science any kind of mesmerism? Can it be used as above stated? Must one be able to mesmerize and understand mesmerism in order to be able to heal?

My whole future happiness in a measure, depends upon your answer to these inquiries- and I do earnestly beseech you to give this letter a few moment's thought and I sincerely hope I may receive a few plain statements in response.

Asking pardon for intruding upon your most valuable time I am your sister in Christ Jesus–

Sincerely and Truly
Mae E. Dodson.
