Editorial Title: R. A. Rowley to Mary Baker Eddy, August 29, 1883
Author: R. A. Rowley
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: August 29, 1883
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by R. A. Rowley on embossed lined paper from Rochester, New York.
Editorial Note: In this long letter, Rowley tells Mary Baker Eddy that a friend has loaned him Eddy's book, Science and Health, and that he is very interested in the healing power it describes. As a young man, Rowley fell into various evil habits and practices, but about five years previously, through God's grace, he was delivered from them all. Since then he has been engaged in Christian missionary work, which he describes as having included bringing twenty-three prostitutes to a house of reformation. Working among "the lowest of the low" and seeing them delivered as he was has made him interested in the potential of applying Christian Science to this work, and he asks questions about taking class in Christian Science to learn more. He also mentions a few instances where he has helped others by laying hands on them, rubbing a part of the body in need of healing, but he wonders if he is right to continue doing this. He writes that he is not interested in having any special power of his own except to help others. He mentions that he and his wife give away at least one-tenth of what they earn, but they always seem to have enough. He says that they have adopted a boy who is two and a half years old. He continues with a few more thoughts about Science and Health, writing that the first time he read Science and Health he was very puzzled by it, but he is reading it again step-by-step and he will continue to read until he understands it. He writes that he had hoped to go into the foreign missionary field but for various reasons that hasn't worked out. He hopes to hear from Eddy soon.
