My dear Student

I enjoyed your letterEditorial Note: This letter is not extant., it was so characteristic of my student who has always been loyal and always will be to the heart's core.

Yes I regret to say the old symptoms As Written: symptons of seven year's ago manifest themselves on some of my students. But error is powerless and Truth is steadfast Thus let you and I hold the thought and having done all, still hold on, and never lay off this breastplate of Christian ScienceEph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Tell your dear wife I appreciate her faithful work as Treasurer of our church. But Miss Campbell also has done a grand work and the children's fundEditorial Note: Campbell organized the Busy Bees, a national group of Christian Science children, to raise funds to build and furnish the Mother's Room within the Original Edifice of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. began with her and it is due to her that it shall end in her hands.

I never fully approved of the lamp that always burns in our church.

This was a rite perpetuated by Vestal VirginsEditorial Note: Vestal Virgins were six virgin women who tended the sacred fire of Vesta in ancient Rome. and they were interested spectators of the tortures of Christians. So the symbol is associated with unpleasant history and I have told the DirectorsEditorial Note: The Christian Science Board of Directors to stop replenishing that lamp for perpetual burning, and to stop the Flower Fund and let the dear children work for their churches in their vicinity. This is best under present circumstances. it removes one bone for contention.

Give my love to your wife and to her husband, Joseph.

As ever yours,
Mother, Mary Baker Eddy
