Dear Student

I hope my husband explained to you my "crime" had only been to so suffer for others I could not meet with you.

When I wrote you I felt it highly important to see you before I went to EuropeEditorial Note: Eddy did not go to Europe. and explain as I cannot in a letter the results to your wife if she continued to be under the treatment of Spofford I have got my eyes open at last to his utterly false character but not before I had recommended him as a healer and trusted him in business as an honest man I can support with all evidence this assertion that he is the most dishonest so-called scientistEditorial Note: Christian Scientist that ever took the field

Since learning his character as I have done my conscience has constantly prompted me to warn you and for this purpose to save the harm he is doing your wife and the possible danger another member of your family is in from his false seeming His practice I have watched recently and judged it alone by the rules of science and as a Metaphysician who knows as perfectly the practice in science from mesmerism as you know the building of your ship I say he practices mesmerism of the most dangerous sort and is taking your wife out of the hands of science and safety He will tell you anything to make his side fair just as he has me and you will believe it a little too long as I did, probably. Had you come as I requested or sent me word when you could come I would have arranged it to put your wife in a way to regain her position but now I have made all the appointments I can meet before I leave Trusting whatever may come that some of my students the Father will keep in the path of Truth and that you will have the clouds cleared away

I am truly Yours
M B G Eddy

N. B. My assertions (all but the mesmerism) I have witnesses to, and have reluctantly learned all and much more than I say of him, and his false character, both in private and public life, as a husband and a pretended scientist.
