Editorial Title: George W. Baker to Mary Baker Eddy, March 23, 1879
Author: George W. Baker
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date:
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by George W. Baker from Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada.
Editorial Note: Baker is replying to a letter, dated February 20, 1879, that he received from his aunt, Mary Baker Eddy. This letter is not extant. Baker says that he did not expect to hear from Eddy so soon, as he has been very lax in writing to her. In her letter, apparently Eddy had asked Baker why he left "civilization" and moved to Canada. Baker replies that he thought that by doing so he was bettering himself but he adds that experience has been a hard teacher and he does not plan to go outside of the United States again except for short trips. Baker says that living in Canada is very unpleasant for a number of reasons, including fleas, nasty winter weather, etc. Baker comments on the "siege" Eddy has had with Daniel H. Spofford and says that if the lawyer Eddy has hired (probably Russell H. Conwell) is not doing his work, why not oust him? Eddy may not know that Varney is dead. He died two weeks ago in Tilton, New Hampshire. Baker believes he was buried there as well. Baker notes that Eddy in her letter quoted from a poem/song titled "Rock Me to Sleep" by Elizabeth Akers Allen, which deals with the theme of returning to the past. Baker is moved by this poem and goes on to philosophize about whether or not it would be desirable to return to one's past and the effect it might have on one's life. Eddy has invited Baker to come for a visit on his way home, and he will accept and come for a very short time. He wants to hear again Eddy's laughter and her "tones" that he remembers so well. He asks to be remembered to Eddy's husband, Asa Gilbert Eddy. Baker would be glad to hear from her at any time, and soon.
