My Dear Teacher.

I receivedAs Written:rec'd your letter of 26thEditorial Note: See L07436. today - also the telegramEditorial Note: See L07437..

I called at the office of the Publishing Co and found Mr Pipe, the chief assistant and to him I stated the case.

1st That the paper must be printed just as it will be presented to them - and that the original addressEditorial Note: Mary Baker Eddy's address, "Unity and Christian Science," was read to the World's Parliament of Religions at The World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. is now "en route"-

2d That your copyright must be preserved & protected

3d That page proofs must be furnished so that you may have absolute evidence that the address has been properly printed.

To all these he assisted without reserve-

They expect to cut many of the addresses but as yours was the only one on Christian Science before the Parliament they consider it necessary to give it complete, and were therefore very prompt in making that promise-

They are pleased with the copyright idea, because it also protects them - They intend to copyright the bookEditorial Note: John Henry Barrows, The History of the World's Parliament of Religions, 2 vols. (Chicago: Parliament Publishing Company, 1893) in America and England, and are glad to have copyrighted papers to put into it-

They will set up the address, in type as soon after its receipt as they can, and will furnish the page proofs-

The 1st Volume containing the 1st 8 days of the Parliament and a corresponding quantity of denominational proceedings will probably be out in 10 days, or two weeks, and the second Volume containing the last 9 days of the Parliament and the remainder of the CongressesEditorial Note: The World's Parliament of Religions was one of several "Congresses" held on specific topics and issues at The World's Columbian Exposition. will be ready Decr 1st or thereabouts -

Your Address was read on the 10th day of the Parliament, and will be in the second Volume and as the first volume is all made up, the other portion of the Christian Scientists contribution will be in the same volume (2d) with yours - but in another place [*]Archival Note: The following text was later added to the document by another annotator, disrupting the surrounding thought. Handshift:Unknown In fact they are grouped together in VolumeAs Written:Vol. II under Christian ScienceAs Written:C. Sc.[*]Archival Note: End floating text.

Handshift:Edward A. KimballNow, dear one, I cannot tell just what is influencing all this, but I can, state the case as it appears

Mr Bonney lately told me, (or rather acknowledged it was so, when I suggested it-) that the officials, Committee etc having the Parliament in hand, were afraid of us.- We were to them, an unknown quantity, and an uncertain one. But after we had our CongressEditorial Note: Christian Science was the only faith invited both to hold a denominational Congress of its own and to make a presentation of its teachings at a plenary session of the World's Parliament of Religions., and your paper had been read, then they were very glad, that we had participated and added so largely to the Success of the undertaking and both Bonney & Barrows. said to me that our meetings & your paper were "events" of the Parliament.

Some of the newspapers said our Congress had the largest attendance of any, and others said that the audience that listened to your paper was the largest of any of those held in Columbus Hall

Out recent manifestation and its high order has been a revelation to them, and the people at large are in a much altered condition of thought towards Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S.

The editors of the book know that if they present a perfect history of the Parliament, it must be a truthful account, and that it would not be in accord with the facts if a meager account of Christian Science was given - and they know enough to know that it will be your writings rather than those of any other writer, that will make that part of their work of the highest and best order obtainable

The only pressure for your paper has come from them. I was really embarrassed by it myself because I felt that I would be glad to do them what they considered a favor and only wrote because I did not feel that it would be right to suppress, what really concerned As Written: conserned you rather than me

Mr Pipe wants to make a plate of your photo and then leave the matter wholly with you to decide after. you see the proof

There is no doubt but that the Christian(?) Ecclesiastics were a good deal agitated during the progress of the Parliament

Their idea of a Parliament had been of a place where a lot of religious people of all creeds & beliefs could be gathered, and there converted to their religion- They did not like it when the Orientals stood their ground, and presented a high degree of morality as a rule, and intimated that the Christians did not follow Christ -

The Congress was a terrific uncovering to protestantism, Catholicism, etc, and it looked to some of them as though everythingAs Written:every thing was going to pieces, but they have calmed down now- They know the worst now, and are glad that it is, no worse

It is a significant indication of your teachings, that all of the Parliament meetings were opened with the Lords Prayer - followed by silent prayer.

The orthodox forms, and empty professions, have had a fatal blow, and the process of disintegration, slow perhaps, but sure has begun-

Sincerely & Lovingly Your
E A Kimball
