Although your letterEditorial Note: See L07590. was mailed to me here in Boston, and is just received - it was written evidently under the supposition that I was still in ChicagoEditorial Note: Chicago, Illinois, where I could talk with Mr McLellan
I arrived here on Sunday, and began the Normal class, yesterday
I have just written to Mr McLellan in general accord with your instructions and asked him to telegraph me on receipt of my letter and give as much as he could by way of definite information or intimation. Also to state if he could come on here to confer in regard to the subject
From what I know of him, I should say that there are several things about him that would go to make up an equipment for the position
1st He is in belief, well- He would not need to spend his time in contention against claims of distress, nor would his work be hindered by a sense of pain
2nd He naturally inclines in the direction of such work
He is a logical, forceful writer - and has a lot of good sense and judgment.
To take such a position would not wrench him out of grooves he is familiar with and which are in accord with his tastes and inclination
3d As a church officer in Chicago and as Publication Committee there, he has had a good deal of experience
He is no novice.
He has been a ScientistEditorial Note: Christian Scientist for ten years or more, and has a good deal of familiarity with the practice and the handling of error–
4th I do not think there would be any trouble about his obeying you, if the way was open for him to ascertain just what you required
He is tractable & amiable
5th His wife is not important nor forceful- I do not think she could be counted on for very much influence either way
6th - I have no idea as to what success he would have in coping with the hypnotic influence which would tend to make him disregard his true relationship towards you–
I do not suppose that anythingAs Written:any thing but a test will determine this question.
7th The most important question is the very one I cannot answer-
It is as to whether he would know enough to do the right thing – that is to do the thing that you would know ought to be done and that you would expect to have done
This is the difficult place, - I know that I am not wise enough and I do not know of anyoneAs Written:any one but yourself that is.
Considering the probability that anyoneAs Written:any one you can procure would fall far below your own standard and fail utterly at times to satisfy your high ideals. I am of the opinion that McLellan would after a whileAs Written:awhile do as well as anyoneAs Written:any one
[*]Archival Note: Some marks have been drawn here. I grieve much because Judge Hanna has failed to meet your views and the needs, but if there is to be a change, I am inclined to think that a change to McLellan would be as good as any.
You speak in your letter of Readers,-
Is it your idea that they should be local members of the Mother church or that they may be taken from any place in the field
Mrs Kimball sends much love
