Editorial Title: Silas J. Sawyer to Mary Baker Eddy, December 4, 1883
Author: Silas J. Sawyer
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: December 4, 1883 - archivist estimate
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Silas J. Sawyer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on lined printed stationery of his dental practice.
Archival Note: It is likely that Sawyer meant to date this letter December rather than November. He wrote a follow-up letter dated December 5, 1883, that references his letter of the previous day.
Editorial Note: Sawyer is replying to a letter (not extant) that he received from Mary Baker Eddy. Receiving it gave him a feeling of relief, and he tells Eddy he will use its contents only for guidance in advancing the Cause of Christian Science. Sawyer reports on what he feels are the shortcomings of some of the Christian Scientists in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Chicago, Illinois, areas, particularly Bradford Sherman, Roger Sherman, Fannie Silsbee, and Jennie Harvey. Clara E. Choate had been expected to visit the area but decided not to come. The Christian Scientists there had been led to believe that Choate has "wonderful power." Sawyer ends his letter by telling Eddy that he will be able to quickly give up his dental practice when he is able to devote his entire time to the practice of Christian Science.
