It was with painful surprise that I learned todayAs Written:to day that a student of mine, Mrs J N Clarke, had made arrangements to take a Normal Course of instructions of you. I telegraphedEditorial Note: These telegrams are not extant. her I would not endorse her, and to you, not to receive As Written: recieve her. I wish to briefly give my reasons for so doing. Personally I have nothing against Mrs Clark, but, for the sake of, and safety As Written: saftey of Christian Science in Milwaukee I cannot recommend Mrs Clarke.

From the first she has refused to believe in Animal Magnetism or Malicious Mesmerism. For near three years, both Mrs Sawyer and myself, have tried to show her the right way. She will acknowledge to your face, that you are right, then go out and talk the contrary. She will lie repeatedly. She says Animal Magnetism is nothing but a "hobby" of Mrs Eddy's," of this we have abundant proof. She will say to you that she does believe in A- M- but that Dr Sawyer did not, or does not teach it like you.

She believes that Swedenborg, and certain philosophers, laid stepping stones to our ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science. and she even believes Evan's and other claimants, teach spiritual healing as much as "S & H."Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and yet if you were to ask her, she would deny ever saying so, or claim that now; after hearing you explain, she sees it differently. She is constantly playing a part, to make you think she is proficient. She has influenced the minds of several other students adversely to our teachings. Secretly As Written: Secretely began teaching several persons, her belief of C. S.Editorial Note: Christian Science and when discovered claimed they were some who would have gone to Brooklyn if she had not taught them. They were people whom I refused to teach unless they paid the regular price, as they were abundantly able.

This is sufficient to show you whom you have to deal with. When she once spoke to me about going to a Normal, I told her I did not object, but wanted her better prepared before going.

I am satisfied she wants a "Certificate, to say you endorse her as a teacher, more than she wants the great benefit of the Normal Course. We have labored much to help Mrs Clarke, and are very sorry for her blindness. We have many times had to meet and correct her false statements to others. She is a very pleasant affable As Written: affiable lady to meet, and might have done much to help us, and our work in the causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. in Milwaukee. I believed it my duty to give you this very small portion of facts concerning her and then if you think you can lead her to repentance, may God bless your efforts. We have advised her to take a regular course of you first. She has read Evans, Mrs StewartsEditorial Note: Probably Elizabeth G. Stewart, Newman and others in the face of our advice or protest. If any wishes to witness the pernicious effects of Evan's and Swarts or Mind-cure works, they ought to be with me here; but I have talked "S & H" and "S & H," keeping it constantly before this people, and there is a revolution setting in. I will tell you more of this later on.

Ever the same in Christ,
Your student
S J Sawyer.
