Accession: 321.44.007
Editorial Title: Roger Sherman to Mary Baker Eddy, November 27, 1883
Author: Roger Sherman
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: November 27, 1883
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Roger Sherman on lined paper from Chicago, Illinois.
Editorial Note: Sherman is replying to a letter (see V00791) from Eddy. She had warned him about a man named Charles (possibly George B. Charles) who had learned of Christian Science in Chicago, visited Eddy in Boston, and was interested in studying with Edward J. Arens or Julius A. Dresser. Sherman has heard of Charles but not met him. Sherman assures Eddy that statements by Richard Kennedy and Arens, claiming that Eddy got her Christian Science teachings from Phineas P. Quimby, have not yet reached Chicago, but when they do, Sherman will oppose them to the best of his ability. Christian Science so far has been introduced among the respectable class of people in Chicago and the few practitioners there are quietly doing good work with varying success in extending the reach of their practices further. Sherman closes his letter by ordering twelve copies of Eddy's book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. A notation on the letter indicates that it was answered on December 13, 1883.
