My dear Teacher:

Your kind letter of recent dateEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. duly received. Am highly gratified with its generous expressions of approval.

Yesterday Dr. Avery and myself called again upon the Rev. Davis and stated your request after some comment upon your meaning in certain quotations he consented to read the paper before his congregation, but, he said, it should be in connection with another sermon upon the subject of "Metaphysics" and in default of explanation he could place no other construction upon the teachings than the our he had already reached!

"The time cometh when there will be no marrying or giving in marriage"Matt 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. Mark 12:24 And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? Mark 12:25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. Luke 20:34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: Luke 20:35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage: ; this in the connection used in "Science & Health"Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy success to be the passage upon which he principally bases his objections. We told him your meaning was identical with that of Christ, that we were willing that Christian Science and its followers should stand upon their merits against all charges that come within the limit of the statute, that free-love did not come within that limit and therefore you wished that passage (which we had previously handed him) from Science & HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy so forcibly stating your view and attitude on the question, read before his congregation.

We also read your offer to teach clergymen gratuitously; this roused his ire somewhat and he said he or any other minister would be a fool to receive As Written: recieve instruction of one whose teachings were directly against what they believed and taught themselves we replied that he would at least be better prepared to criticize fairly than he now appeared to be

The above are the salient points of the interview and we now await with interest the sermon believing that if satisfactory reparation is not made that the matter still remains open for an action at law.

Your method in dealing with this case has ever met my heartiest approval and admiration

Have you noticed Dr Sawyer's advertisement of the Wisconsin Metaphysical Institute in the current number of "Mind in Nature"Editorial Note: This was a periodical being published at the time by the Cosmic Publishing Company in Chicago, Illinois. Its full title was Mind in Nature: A Popular Journal of Psychical, Medical, and Scientific Information.? I see he makes use of your name: shall I recommend him?

Very Respectfully,
Your Student,
Roger Sherman, C.S.
