Editorial Title: Pearl D. Hoyt to Mary Baker Eddy, October 11, 1883
Author: Pearl D. Hoyt
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: October 11, 1883
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Pearl D. Hoyt on lined printed stationery of the Geneva Grape Sugar Co. from Geneva, Illinois.
Editorial Note: Hoyt is replying to a letter dated October 7, 1883, that he received from Mary Baker Eddy (L15520). He is confused as to how to obtain copies of Eddy's works, but he is eager to read them so he can ascertain the truth of Christian Science. He had heard from friends about positive results obtained from the Christian Science practice of Clara E. Choate. Hoyt then took a two-week course of instruction in Christian Science from Bradford Sherman and Roger Sherman. He found it helpful, but he still wants to know more about Christian Science, and he wants to determine if he would be able to practice it successfully. He tells Eddy about his background and medical problems he has had, which he feels may be better treated through metaphysics than the treatments he received previously. He asks if it is true that women make better Christian Science healers than do men, and if so, why it is. Hoyt has an aunt, aged 65, who is determined to learn Christian Science. He himself is not yet 40.
