Archival Note: This edition of this pamphlet was published in 1881, but the majority of the annotations,
made by Mary Baker Eddy and others, were likely made in 1883.
Editorial Note: Edward J. Arens published this pamphlet, The Understanding of Christianity or God and the Distinction between Spirit and Matter, 2nd ed. (Boston: Alfred Mudge & Son, 1881), under his own name, but it contains
numerous plagiarisms from Mary Baker Eddy’s book, Science and Health. On this copy, Eddy, possibly Julia S. Bartlett, and other Christian Scientists have identified and noted the plagiarisms. They may
have identified these passages soon after the publication of the pamphlet in 1881
in preparation for a potential lawsuit against Arens for copyright infringement. (In
a letter dated November 22, 1881, to Eldridge J. Smith [L02053Click link to view L02053 document in new window], Mary Baker Eddy notes that her student, James C. Howard, had discouraged her from filing suit.) Although the Eddys decided not to initiate
the suit then, this copy of the Arens pamphlet was probably used by Eddy’s attorney,
John L. S. Roberts, in preparing for the legal action against Arens that eventually took place. On April
6, 1883, Eddy asked the Circuit Court of the United States for an injunction to stop Arens from printing and circulating his pamphlet. Later that year, on October
4, the Court ordered Arens to stop circulating the pamphlet and to destroy all remaining
copies.]
