Yours just received giving the result of attempted reconciliation between D. H. Spofford and his Teacher through the suggestion of Mr Colby and others of Newburyport As I said to you and them at the time we had no faith to believe that Spofford could be persuaded to do right for we had exerted our utmost ability to persuade him to do that long since But I see through mistake Spofford has been led to think that we suggested reconciliation whereas we only assented to the suggestion of Mr Colby and others of Newburyport Knowing your interest in Science and thanking you for the interest manifested by you in its Author I think I can depend upon your correcting the mistake by informing Spofford that reconciliation was suggested by the aforesaid and assented to by us in case S. would stop doing wrong and do right.

Will you favor us with his reply as soon as he gives it

Yours Truly
