I have tried to write you ever since you were here I was so sadly impressed with the great change I feel in you under the demoralizing influence of mesmerism. I pity you but I must do my duty to you and have tried to do it so far. I read in your minds that you have been trying to teach that lady that was with you and who is paying you for herself and you are intending to pay me for yourself Now do you not see this is wrong to begin with? You know if by teaching her the little you understand has hindered her, as it hasno doubt from learning it correctly from the right source, that you have broken a moral law and have not done as you would be done byEditorial Note: This is a form of the “Golden Rule,” which can be found in various religions. One place where it is found is in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 7, verse 12.? I hope you see this even now, better late than never, and also realize the terrible effect the falsehoods poured into your mind is producing, for if Truth heals and saves as we know it does error is taking the opposite ground in its effects unless you are enough of a Christian As Written: christian to be a law to yourself of right that none can weaken or destroy

I expect now to open my classEditorial Note: Goodwin did not end up participating in this class but took class with Eddy in fall 1881. one week from today the 10th inst and shall charge you one hundred dollarsEditorial Note: $100 in 1881 is the equivalent of $2522.96 in 2016. because of the method you have taken for teaching two instead of one. I told you another pupil should pay your tuition that is if you would bring me a pupil I would give you the opportunity to learn without paying tuition. The young lady in question whom you have been trying to teach is able, as I am informed, to pay for you one third at least of my tuition and I require you to make some compensation for abusing my confidence and think if you make it in money it will teach you a lesson longer to be remembered if you are poor and this is the biggest crossMatt 10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me is not worthy of me. Matt 16:24 ¶Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. and will do you the most good.
