Manuscript Description: Handwritten by James Ackland on lined paper from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Editorial Note: Ackland is responding to a letter from Asa Gilbert Eddy (L16172Click link to view L16172 document in new window). He reports on the progress of the patient Eddy asked him about. Ackland writes that he gave the patient Christian Science treatment until about three weeks ago. When the patient did not think he was getting better, he decided to take a trip to Boston and call on Mary Baker Eddy; however, he ended up not going and Ackland has not talked with him since. Ackland was astounded to hear about the Lynn Rebellion, which Eddy had mentioned in his letter. Ackland did not know all the students involved, but he writes that he thought highly of Miranda R. Rice, Dorcas B. Rawson, and James C. Howard, and he asks what their withdrawal from the Church of Christ (Scientist) and the Christian Scientist Association can mean. He feels that if mesmerism was the cause of their leaving, the charges against Mary Baker Eddy cannot be sustained and that truth will win them back. The Eddys have Ackland's sympathy, and he recalls with pleasure the times he has spent with them. Ackland then makes the suggestion that a teacher of Christian Science healing should perform at least one cure for the students during the class, as he has been asked if he ever saw a healing take place during class. Ackland mentions receiving letters recently from Samuel G. Todd and Arthur T. Buswell. He closes by commenting that it is the busiest time of year for his printing business and also asks Asa Gilbert Eddy to let him know if he did not receive a notice from the Editor of the Herald of Health regarding Mary Baker Eddy's book, Science and Health.
