Several times since the arrival of yours of the 23d Mc'hEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. it has been on my thought to write you, but each time I have been interruptedAs Written:interupted. Could I but step into your presence this morning, I am sure the interview would be a profitable one. Both to the causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. and myself. Many thanks for your regard to my interest in the coming Journals. for I do assure you that whatever regards the interests of "Christian Science", includes myself. We are too As Written: to deeply absorbed in this glorious work for Christ, to take anything personal, that may be said in respect to our method of working.
We are almost importuned by others, who are sending forth numerous publications. advocating As Written: adocating some method of mind-cure, but when we bring them under the unerring analysis As Written: alalysis of Truth, some error, of greater or less magnitude is developed. They all remind me the saying of our SaviorEditorial Note: Jesus Christ, of those who are trying to get into the fold some other way than by the door. and the same being a thief and a robberJohn 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. . Christian Science come to them, it is the open doorRev 3:8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. , and because no sin can enter, they are afraid, do not wish to let go, and so set about devising once easier (to them) way. A few days since I received a copy of a publication called "Bread Pills, a Study of Mind-Cure, written by a Mr Barrows of BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts - who solicits me to send the name of some dealer with whom he can place the work on sale. He claims that Dr Buswell had refered him to me, also that Christian Scientists approved the work. I have looked it over, some parts of it are good, but when the writer claims to explain a little of "Christian Science I apprehend he must have obtained his information; (not from Mrs Eddy). from some so-called Metaphysical healer.
When I consider how difficult it is to grasp even a little Truth, and make it clear to others. I cannot feel it would be safe to allow my name to be used as endorsing estimation, wherein you can confidently recommend it as true to the interests of ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science, also that a card or notice in the "J. of C- S-" will be a proper means of continuing that interest. Some such as you before corrected, or if possible one more suitable. You may rest assured that no student or patient has entered, or gone forth with aught of mesmerism or "mind-cure" systems, either in teaching or healing.
If you cannot see that it will help the cause in this field of labor, then we shall continue the same as before.
A few evenings since I delivered a lecture in the parlors of one of our respected citizens on Christian ScienceAs Written:C- S-. taking as a basis the- (Rom-1-20Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: ) There were some forty present, afterward one of our students, in speaking of the effects of our remarks. said one of the hearers called me a "crank", some said it was absurd, and some went home to 'pray. We are continuing to give these talks, and have every reason to believe they are doing good.
You once wrote me to use no names when working against malicious mesmerism because I had met this question, in delivering the law upon it. Was it yourself to which this applied. I certainly have had unmistakable evidence of "their" recent work upon us here, and have removed it, by talking them up in name, and continue to do so.
I hope our April Journals will come prompt this time.
Dear Teacher - I had closed this, but upon rereading your letter, must tell you that none can sincerely practice and teach this great Truth, without discovering so much selfishness, that it fairly startles one. I know it is my own worst enemy, but I also know that if I am "faithful in all mine house"Num 12:6 And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. Num 12:7 My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house. Num 12:8 With him will I speak mouth to mouth, even apparently, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the Lord shall he behold: wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses? , I shall conquer.
I am glad to say, that this one sin you mention lays not to our door. None come, or go from us without being urged to take and study "S & H"Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy..
Mr Swart has been writing for some information, but I believe that he has been completely ignored, which is as it should be. ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science has no controversy with errors in this section, no more than it has in BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts.
