Your very much appreciated letterEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. was received this afternoon. I hardly expected an answer at all, knowing you to be so busy and therefore prize it the more. Being in fullest sympathy with your work and everyday growing in knowledge of the Truth there is an interest to me in the Truth yet unknown which makes the present as a chain of iron. [*]Archival Note: A metamark that looks like an X appears at this point in the manuscript. The real dazzles with such glory, the unreal has grown into a deep shadow. Then when you know where my treasure is you know also where is my heartMatt 6:19 ¶Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: Matt 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: Matt 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. . It is in your work. God is holding me now, lest I be too hasty, but after awhile I know He will open the way - just as soon as I am able to walk in it and not stumble. Since I read your booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy the seed thoughts have been developing and indeed the materialism of the Church - so called - is unbearable almost, but I am telling the Truth as I discover it. My sermons grow richer, stronger, fuller, and my own soul is set on fire - Oh if the Church could know God instead of believing a dogma, but of course they will cry heresy. Already my people who boast and have boasted of their non-sectarianismAs Written:non sectarianism I find to be slaves of the letter and worshippers of the spiritual, and with the selfish cry of old "We are the church". They do not know, they have never understood, the meaning of "On this Rock, I will build my Church", and the gates of hades shall not prevail against itMatt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. . I see no other conclusion than resignation here, but we accept nothing but the Bible As Written: bible and I propose to teach that and prove it as long as I haveAs Written:Ihave a place whereon to set my foot. This week I haveAs Written:Ihave been planning to make a support independent but will continue to the end of the year. The plan was to take the editorship of our county paper, a secular journal; but even if I hadAs Written:Ihad succeeded the work is to meAs Written:tome a waste of time compared with the higher work. To be able to teach the whole Truth, as I can learn it, I shall have to be free from the narrowness of the so-called As Written: socalled orthodoxy of Christianity. There is a broadness, a depth, a consistency, a unity in "Christian Science" to which my whole being responds, to man or woman either for that part of this matter can think through the mists and shadows of sectarian phenomena. On the Rock the true thinkers who are the true worshippers and the true workers must stand with Jesus of Nazareth. Yes my soul longs to beAs Written:tobe able to stand alongside in the thick fight for the restoration of the teaching of the RedeemerEditorial Note: Jesus Christ.

Our FatherEditorial Note: God will open the way for my feet. Just as He wills and I know His will is perfect, and with this assurance I am patient. The chief obstacle now is the disbelief or rather the misunderstanding of my wife; but I know she will come to know and when she does she will be strong. I have sent for "Science and Health"Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and notwithstanding you are absent I expect the books tomorrowAs Written:to morrow, she has promised to read carefully and I am sure she will come to accept., she is intuitional but does not know how to think and of course never can correctly until her eyes are opened. "All is Mind," is an interpretation of the most intricate and a solution of the most difficult. But then of course were if she cannotAs Written:can not keep up with me she will do her best to follow and I think can be very useful in the work.

I received a letterEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. yesterday from A. T. Buswell enclosed in another from Charles, M. Howe 59 Chambers St. I hadAs Written:Ihad written to Dr Buswell and he being busy delayed answering me, but handed my letter to C.M. Howe. He proposed to take our cases. In the meantime because of not hearing from A. T. B - I wrote to Mrs Stetson whom you speak in your letter and have not heard from her yet. My wife objects to being treated until she reads the booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and I think it best to let her pursue this course. When she knows half I do, and that is as yet not much for I am just standing in the gateway but I am not hindering others nor opposing myself rather longing to reach what I faintly see away on the horizon. The dawning light will reveal wonders untold - I sayAs Written:Isay when she knows half I do she will rejoice with a joy unspeakable and full of gloryI Pet 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: . How infinitely grand is revelation through all phenomena with the understanding of Truth. When I receive the booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy I shall study them and the Bible As Written: bible together as a diligent student and strive to glorify God. I knowAs Written:Iknow He has a large work for me to perform and I will perform it "What wilt Thou have me to do"?Acts 9:1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, Acts 9:2 And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. Acts 9:3 And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: Acts 9:4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? Acts 9:5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. Acts 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. is the question I ask of Christ the Truth.

I wrote to Bro Howe in regard to my wife and further told him as he insisted on my buying "Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy that I had sent for it and that perhaps it would be better for us both that I shouldAs Written:Ishould study and endeavor to put into practical effect, what I learned, on our own cases; It would make us stronger and prepare us for entering class. When my wife is convinced then it will all work well.

Again I thank you for your kindness and I hope to express my appreciation in the future by giving freely of what I receiveMatt 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not. Matt 10:6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Matt 10:7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Matt 10:8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. . Not a day later than I can possibly help will I be in availing myself of your kind offer. Let me learn! Truth is what I Thirst for. "Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled"Matt 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. . I knowAs Written:Iknow this is true. Therefore will I wait in patience.

To be with you in BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts, in the ministry would be my delight. Persecution would pour in I see from all sides but what need I careAs Written:Icare. Again the glory of His promise shines out. With my experience in pastoral work and also as an evangelist I would be very useful in organizing and developing the societies.

There must be organization in order to progress. The mighty strides of the gospel in the 1st Century were because of the broadness, freeness and fullness As Written: fulness of the Truth declared, accompanied by its own demonstration, and then its perpetuation was because of the thorough organization of the Christians in the cities and provinces of the territory in which it had been proclaimed.

God will open the way. In the meantime I will lose no time in learning what I can from "Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Hoping that you may return to your work rested from the cares of it and also to hear from you at your convenience I am
