Editorial Title: George W. Chase to Julia S. Bartlett, February 7, 1883
Author: George W. Chase
Recipient: Julia S. Bartlett
Date: February 7, 1883
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by George W. Chase on embossed lined paper from Jacksonville, Florida.
Editorial Note: Chase writes to Julia S. Bartlett that he was shocked to hear that "Mrs. W." has died. He writes that Whiting was one of his first patients as a Christian Science healer and one of his best friends. He speaks of what he regards as the obsession of Christian Scientists with mesmerism, which he calls a "humbug" that he has seen through. He received a letter claiming that Mary Baker Eddy had said that Chase and Samuel G. Todd had killed Whiting through mesmerism. He hopes that Eddy did not actually say this, but he feels that she does need to confront her obsession with mesmerism and move beyond it. He feels that she could be a great person if she would only do this, and he writes that he is no longer troubled by mesmerism.
