Editorial Title: Arthur T. Buswell to Mary Baker Eddy, February 20, 1884
Author: Arthur T. Buswell
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: February 20, 1884
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Arthur T. Buswell on his lined printed stationery from Boston, Massachusetts.
Editorial Note: This is Buswell's response to a letter (see L13968) he received from Mary Baker Eddy, asking him to vacate the premises of the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, where he'd been living. It seems that Buswell took certain actions in the case of Clara E. Choate that Eddy did not approve of. He lists three possible reasons why Eddy asked him to leave: 1. Eddy had informed Buswell of a communication she'd received in which it was stated that Buswell had wronged Eddy. Buswell does not know the contents of this communication and thus cannot take any action concerning it. He adds that the individual making the communication should have come directly to him instead of going to Eddy behind his back. 2. Buswell's sending of a duplicate of the letter informing Choate of her expulsion from the Church of Christ (Scientist) without obtaining legal advice about whether or not is was necessary to do so. He states that Clara Choate's husband, George D. Choate, had intimated that Clara had not received a notice of her expulsion, and Buswell was convinced that there needed to be proof that she'd been notified. He took the action he did after consulting with Julia S. Bartlett and Calvin A. Frye, and adds that he is sincerely sorry if what he did was wrong. 3. Buswell's visit to former Governor Nathaniel Banks after Eddy asked him not to visit Banks. It is not completely clear what this is about, but Buswell says that he only consulted Banks after not reaching the others he'd originally set out to meet with. Finally, Buswell asks Eddy's forgiveness for any wrongs he has committed and that she will inform him of any other reasons for her action that he has not mentioned in this letter. He affirms his desire to live up to Eddy's wise teachings, that his moving out can be averted and that he can continue living at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College.
