Your favor of the 15th,Editorial Note: This letter is not extant. at hand; occasioned me some surprise, for I left you with, what I supposed; a clear understanding of what I was to do, also since my return I have labored continuously for one object.
I did not propose you to come out here on the promises of a few individuals, that was the purpose of the “Announcement Circular” that all joining the class would matriculate with me, and everything sure before I sent for you to come. When I deal with Mortal Mind, I take none of its statements for facts. You shall have the $2800.00Editorial Note: $2,800 in 1884 is the equivalent of $77,529.08 in 2017. as per agreement, or you need not come, I only wish it was twenty eight thousand.Editorial Note: $28,000 in 1884 is the equivalent of $775,290.81 in 2017. I have now decided the class to be in Chicago, and you will say it is wise, when I explain, what seems to me, the direction of God in this choice.
O: my friend, how it pains me to to see the work of Mrs Silsbee, this is it – I had it arranged that a Mrs Millidge and Miss Byer of Oconto, also a Mrs Sargent of Fort Howard, were to join your class here. Mrs Millidge wrote me a few days since, that Mrs Silsbee had been to Fort Howard and persuaded Miss Byer & Mrs Sargent, not to come to Milwaukee, but to come to Boston. Of course Mrs Silsbee is ignorant of all, our plans, but other words of hers point to a selfish ambition. Will you drop a short note to Mrs Thomas As Written: Thos Milledge Oconto, Wisconsin, endorsing any arrangement I make in reference to your coming west. I know the “Announcement Circular may accomplish it, but I am particularly desirous those three should be your students, as they have never been taught in Error.
I expect Mrs Silsbee here today to close up our business matters, then she starts for Smith’s Basin,Editorial Note: Smiths Basin, New York she has not the remote idea of your coming.
I understand that letter of Mr Morrill, and do not think you will be annoyed by his letters again. I have been working faithfully against “mesmerism” in Chicago, and as evidence of my work, today I received another As Written: annother order from there for 6 set S&H.Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. which order I have filled, by taking all I had, and West & Co had also. I am now entirely out of books, but hope Mr Frye has sent the 24 set I ordered, last Saturday, by telegraph. I often take up the “Mals” on BrothersAs Written:Bro’s Frye, Marston and all of yours, that “they” cannot make them slip, or inattentive As Written: inattentative to your interests. If we are as prompt, and persistent for truth as the “Mals” are in Error and Evil, what a mighty tide Christian labors would sweep over the world.
And now dear teacher and guide, a word of myself. I promised I would return to “Rome”Editorial Note: A reference to Boston, Massachusetts. with you if you would come west, that is if you were of the same mind, that I could help the cause better by so doing. I have thought much of it since returning, but now, confess I do not know how to look upon it; and I find I am very anxious: So today, I have left it with God to decide, through you, what is the better part for me. I love the work, and dare not turn back now even if I desired, again, I know that if Mrs Sawyer enters into the project of going to Boston, even for a time, we can help you. I have not mentioned the proposition to her yet, preferring to await your arrival, and desires.
My mind is so full of the great good to be accomplished by your visit; I cannot find space, to express myself, in a letter.
Do not fail this time, God will take care his causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. does not suffer in Boston As Written: B – during your absence I am sure. Make the offering this once, and then behold the blessing that will follow.
Mrs Silsbee has come and gone, and says She will be in Boston to hear you next Sunday. but her main object is to inform you that she has got two pupils for you, to come to Boston As Written: B - Miss Byer & Mrs Sargent. Mrs Silsbee has not the remotest idea of your coming west:
I enclose you an “Announcement Circular” I expect the “Mals” will work as soon as they hear of it. I know “they” have no suspicion of it yet, and I do not think they will until after you arrive.
As soon as I receive replies from these circulars, I shall go to Chicago and complete arrangements.
Do not be at all apprehensive of the result, tell Dr’s Frye, Marston & Hanover to be vigilant, and I will answer for this field of labor: “God and I are a majority”, so we will move on confident of victory. Mrs Sawyer unites in love
